Man Gives Brother a Second Chance at Life | Yahoo! News

While most brothers tend to have a lot in common, Jared and Cameron Wohl of New Jersey share a rare bond, a liver. Cameron was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease that primarily affected his liver and when his condition took a turn for the worse last summer, a liver transplant became the only option.

NJ man gives brother second chance at life with liver transplant | Pix 11 (Andrew Ramos)

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- While most brothers tend to have a lot in common, Jared and Cameron Wohl of Morris Plains, N.J. share the greatest bond of all – a liver.

Diagnosed at 13 with a rare autoimmune disease that primarily affected his liver, Cameron’s condition took a turn for the worse in the summer of 2013 when a liver transplant became the only option.

“You always think ‘well not me, it’s not gonna be me’ but I was one of those many people waiting for a liver,” Wohl told PIX11 News.

Cameron found himself on an organ waiting list, a list that sees 18 Americans die each day waiting for an organ. Shockingly enough, a new person is added every 10 minutes.

“I would be lying if I said there weren’t times that I felt like giving up but the light at the end of the tunnel was that things do happen for a reason.”

That light came in the form of older brother Jared who stepped up to the plate, offering up 65% of his liver after he was approved to be a living donor to Cameron.

A decision he says he didn’t think twice about.

“It just speaks to the testament of unity and love and what family is truly meant to embody which is this act of selflessness,” Jared Wohl told PIX11 News.

On February 11, 2014, the brothers underwent a successful liver transplant at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

It’s a journey they documented on film -- appropriately titled “65 Percent” -- all in an effort to start a conversation on organ donation and to prove that “We Are Vital to Each other” – an acronym for their movement.

“It’s been my experience that if you really want to connect with individuals, you have to let your guard down and literally bring them into your experience,” explained Jared Wohl, on why they put their story out there. “Let them experience it with you.”

After a year that could be described as pretty eventful, Cameron can’t help but reflect.

“A year ago today they found a tumor on my liver that expedited the transplant,” he said. “Now today we’re in our post production stages of the film. It’s amazing.”

What a difference a year makes for the brothers from Morris Plains and it’s their message that they hope sheds light and changes the world.

“This can affect anyone at any point in their lives and people need to learn about before that time of tragedy,” Jared Wohl said.

The story of two brothers: Cameron and Jared Wohl | Parsippany Focus (Frank Cahill)

Cameron and Jared Wohl were guest speakers at the Kiwanis Club of Greater Parsippany on Thursday, June 26. Cameron and Jared are founders of “The Wave Set.” The Wave Set helps create a culture of love, unity and selflessness, thus showing the world that “We Are Vital to Each other”.

Kiwanis President, Carol Tiesi, a teacher at Littleton Elementary School was Cameron’s second grade teacher more than fifteen years ago.

Here is the story of the two brothers. Jared and Cameron were ironically born three years apart to the day. However, now their shared birthday isn’t the only fascinating connection between the two of them.

Cameron Wohl was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease, primarily affecting his liver, at the age of 13. About a decade later (in August of 2013), things took an unfortunate turn when his doctors explained that they had spotted a tumor on his liver and his disease had been consistently progressing.

A liver transplant had become necessary in order for him to continue his life, but due to the high demand of organs, regardless of his critical state, he was nowhere near the top of the list.

As fate would have it, the liver, which is the organ that Cameron was in need of, has the ability to regenerate. Thus, enabling a recipient to receive a portion of someone else’s liver, known as a “living-donor” transplant.

Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky enough to be eligible for this procedure, as many people have to wait for a deceased donor. He was lucky to be offered the “living-donor” option, however the hard part wasn’t over.

Cameron still had to find a viable match and someone willing enough to give him a second chance at life.

As soon as his brother Jared heard the news, Jared immediately sought to be evaluated to see if he met the criteria.

After extensive testing, they received the most exciting news. Jared was accepted to be his younger brother’s living-donor and they underwent the successful transplant on Tuesday, February 11, 2014; a day that they will never forget.

They officially made their TV Debut on April 24 during ABC’s Emmy Winning Show, “Organ Donors: Connected For Life.” The show opened up it’s 2014 episode with the story about the Wohl’s.

The Wave Set was founded by two Parsippany brothers, Jared and Cameron. In December 2013, they launched a successful crowd-funding campaign to raise money for the production of a documentary depicting their family’s journey through the transplant experience.

They were hoping to raise $30,000 for the documentary, but was able to raise $34,796. In addition, the brothers launched a line of The Wave Set apparel, which was used to incentivize all potential contributors to support their campaign. This brought additional awareness by acting as a visual representation of their advocacy to the cause.

The Wave Set looks to set forth their first grassroots campaign, which will raise additional awareness by planning and executing in-person speaking engagements, hosting college visits, and facilitating live events nationwide. These campaigns also aim to share the stories of people all over the world who face the harsh realities of the need for a life-saving organ transplant.

Currently, on average 18 people die every day while awaiting an organ transplant and every 10 minutes another person is added to the waiting list. To register to become an organ donor in New Jersey, click here.

The brothers believe that these numbers are inexcusable and are doing everything in their power to change that. It all begins with their documentary, currently being produced.

They are in the final stages of this real-life depiction of what it has been like for the brothers and their family during their time of adversity, just as it is for the nearly 78,000 other active transplant candidates. They expect the documentary to be released during the Summer of 2014.

The documentary is the first step in introducing their brand “The Wave Set”, educating the world that we truly are vital to each other.

ORGAN DONORS: CONNECTED FOR LIFE | ABC7 New York

NEW YORK –

We New Yorkers, so proud of our "top dog status" in so many areas, are now last when it comes to donating life-saving organs. Every other state in the nation has more organ donors than New York.WABC-TV, in connection with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is inviting viewers to answer the call to be an organ donor. We'll sort through the myths and talk to the experts. "Organ Donors: Connected for Life" is a half-hour special hosted by Eyewitness News Anchor Liz Cho.

We'll learn about living donors and hear how one young man from New Jersey donated a piece of his liver to his brother and how they're both on a crusade to spread the word about the importance of registering to be an organ donor. We'll see how a donated kidney changed the quality of life of a Staten Island man and a Broadway actor.

Deceased donors are heroes to many families in our area, including a young father with a new heart. Outreach and education is crucial and we'll see what's being done to raise awareness. We'll hear from former NFL pro Boomer Esiason about his personal reasons for bringing awareness to this issue. And we'll get answers to the most asked questions when it comes to organ donation.

Experts featured include physicians and surgeons from NY-Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical Center and the New York Organ Donor Network.

Note: Recently, "Connected for Life" from 2013 was awarded the New York Emmy award for a special in the Societal Concerns category.

Crowdfunding Mailbox: Hoodsie – Onesie, The Wave Set & Porscha Starr Lingerie | Crowdfund Insider (JD Alois)

Happy New Year to all of our site visitors.  2013 was a great year for the crowdfunding industry on a global basis but I predict that 2014 will be even better as the industry captures wide-spread acceptance and becomes the norm for funding creative projects, charity and new business ventures.  If you would like Crowdfund Insider to take a look at your crowdfunding campaign just send us an email at Info@crowdfundinsider.com

To start off the New Year we have three really great and diverse crowdfunding campaigns:  Hoodsie: Super Comfortable Pima Cotton Onesies for Adults; The Wave Set – Documentary; and Porscha Starr at the Las Vegas International Lingerie Show.

To start off today, I want to share The Wave Set.  This is truly a great and admirable crowdfunding campaign.  Crowdfunding like this inspires everyone to do good and incredible things.

At 13 years of age Cameron Wohl was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease that will affect him for the rest of his life.  The disease primarily affects his liver and he was added to the transplant list for the life saving procedure.  Eighteen people die every single day waiting for an organ donor.

This past August his doctors told Cameron, and his family, that things have taken a turn for the worse and it was imperative he have a transplant to continue living.  Enter his brother Jared.

As fate would have it, Jared is an exact match to transplant a portion of his liver to his brother.  This coming February the procedure is going to take place and they want to document the entire process and experience so as to share it with the world.  Watch the pitch video.  The campaign is already fully funded on Indiegogo where they have surpassed their $30,000 goal but there are still ten days left in the project.  Love the Hockey Jersey.

Hoodsie-Onesie has got to have one of the best pitch videos I have seen in a long time.  I am still smiling.  If there was an award for the best Kickstarter Rap Video – you guys get the gold medal.  Check for it in the mail.  The video is just part of the allure of this already fully funded Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign.  The Hoodsie Pima Cotton Onesie for Adults is without a doubt going to be a big hit.  Step aside Snuggies, you have just been trumped.  Rush over to Kickstarter today and order your very own Hoodsie and let the coolness aura flow. This campaign is courtesy of Lisa and John in Toronto, Ontario.  I want one today.

Finally we have fashion designer Porscha Woodward out of Los Angeles looking for funding to attend the International Lingerie Show in Las Vegas.  Crowdfunding on Indiegogo, Porscha Starr the company is looking to raise $5000 to cover the cost associated with the show.  I may be a bit biased but the visuals are great.  Check it out for yourself. Have you considered some actual lingerie as a reward?

THE WAVE SET – Documentary – Indiegogo

Alone we can do great things, but together we can change the world. Join brothers, Cameron & Jared, as they launch a life-saving movement.

We recognize how vital it is to give the outside world a first-hand look at our personal experiences regarding organ transplantation and how it affects everyday life; the good, the bad, & the ugly. It all begins with this documentary…

We are building a brand that represents unity and most importantly, a promise to give others a second chance at life, through spreading awareness on the importance of organ donation.

OUR STORY

Jared & I are brothers, born 3 years apart, exactly to the day, yet our birthday isn’t the only fascinating connection between to the two of us. You see, I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease, primarily affecting my liver, just over a decade ago. Although my family and I have faced much hardship over the years, things took an unfortunate turn this past August when my doctors explained that they had spotted a tumor on my liver and my disease had been consistently progressing. A liver transplant has now become vital in order for me to continue my life. Due to the high demand of organs regardless of my critical state, I am no where near the top of the list. When doctors posed the idea of undergoing a living-donor transplant (where someone donates 40-60% of their liver, having both the donor & recipient’s liver regenerate to full size) my older brother, Jared, jumped at the opportunity. As fate would have it, he was approved and we are set to undergo the transplant operation this upcoming February.   — Cameron

WHAT WE’RE DOING & WHY

Currently, on average 18 people die every day while awaiting an organ transplant and every 10 minutes another person is added to the waiting list. – (organdonor.gov

We are going to film a raw, real-life depiction of what it has been like for us and our family during this time of adversity, just as it is for the nearly 78,000 other active transplant candidates.

This documentary is the first step in introducing our brand “The Wave Set”, thus educating the world that we truly are vital to each other

THE WAVE SET - Documentary | Indiegogo

We are building a brand that represents unity and most importantly, a promise to give others a second chance at life, through spreading awareness on the importance of organ donation.

 OUR STORY

Jared & I are brothers, born 3 years apart, exactly to the day, yet our birthday isn't the only fascinating connection between to the two of us. WHAT WE'RE DOING & WHY

Currently, on average 18 people die every day while awaiting an organ transplant and every 10 minutes another person is added to the waiting list. - (organdonor.gov)

We believe that these numbers are inexcusable and we're doing everything in our power to change that. It all begins with our documentary. So how are we going to do this? It's simple. We are going to film a raw, real-life depiction of what it has been like for us and our family during this time of adversity, just as it is for the nearly 78,000 other active transplant candidates.

This documentary is the first step in introducing our brand "The Wave Set", thus educating the world that we truly are vital to each other.

 HOW YOU CAN HELP

In order to facilitate a world-wide movement and save the many lives that need our help, everyone needs to pitch in. With your pledge, we can turn this concept into a reality and the documentary will be just the beginning. Simply put, we cannot afford all of these expenses...

Here is a breakdown of our costs:

  1. Pre-Production: $3,000

  2. Production: $10,400

  3. Post-Production: $6,500

  4. Emergency/Miscellaneous Fund (just in case): $2,000

  5. IndieGogo/3rd Party Credit Card Fees: $2,100

  6. Overhead: $6000

We are using this documentary to shed light on the importance of organ donation and demand for donors, while eliminating the fallacies with becoming a donor. Once the documentary is filmed, we are then going to continue to spread awareness through the following ways:

  1. Spend countless hours pitching the film to network television, film festivals, & the general public.

  2. Perform speaking engagements.

  3. Plan and put together live events w/ musical acts & other entertainment.

  4. Launch our full line of "The Wave Set" apparel.

We understand the importance of taking a grassroots approach in getting our peers to become organ donors and are willing to do everything in our power to do so. Bottom line, you're pledge will help us make this a reality.
